Don’t miss Off the Ledger LIVE! — the first conference for our growing Slack community of finance and accounting pros. Don’t miss Off the Ledger LIVE! — the first conference for our growing Slack community of finance and accounting pros.

By any measure, the Off the Ledger (OtL) Slack group for finance and accounting professionals ranks as a first-rate community. Its size and growth rate, level of participation, amount of knowledge shared, and diversity of opinions demonstrate deep engagement and confirm the value of a strong network. As a group of finance and accounting professionals who support and learn from each other, it’s a community in the truest sense of the word. And now, we are pleased to announce Off the Ledger LIVE! — OtL’s first annual conference.

This virtual conference was created specifically for this community, but is open to all finance and accounting professionals. Its inaugural theme — chosen by OtL members — is “Small Teams. Big Impact.” There are five sessions on topics ranging from data, to remote teams, to fundraising. Presenters are all practitioners who have successfully scaled notable companies, with stories that are relevant to this community. Most sessions are CPE eligible

Applicants to OtL are screened to ensure that they have the professional qualifications and/or position to be a positive contributing member. OtL is a no-sales-allowed community for finance and accounting professionals across many industries and non-profits. Community standards are adhered to, and the no-sales rule is strictly enforced. The result is a lively, safe community that members tell us is invaluable as they navigate their career path. As one member put it: “You’ve built the most engaged Slack community I’ve been a part of, and it is constantly full of really helpful content.”

Airbase first launched OtL in December of 2019, and the online community quickly became a lifeline for finance and accounting professionals. The need to connect with others was apparent, and membership has grown from 50 members in January 2020 to about 3,500 today, with over 95,000 posts and messages created in that time. Members offer support and advise each other on subjects such as industry trends, software recommendations, accounting questions, career advice, and more. Finance-related job postings are listed regularly, and we’ve heard several success stories of companies connecting with the perfect candidate through OtL. Recent hot topics include a discussion on the pros and cons of venture debt, recommendations for forecasting and planning tools, and tips on the logistics of distributing laptops to fully remote teams.

Events and networking opportunities further elevate the connections and the support offered. A good example is the one-on-one networking program, which matches members with peers in similar roles or facing similar challenges — about 200 matches have been made to date. Members have also suggested events for Airbase to host, including our recent popular 20-Minute Tales from the Frontlines of Finance webinar on ASC 606 and Commission Capitalization

Given the success of those events, a conference is the natural next step, and we’re excited to bring members together to share knowledge and stories. This year’s theme reflects the challenges and opportunities faced by finance teams, whose contributions to their companies’ success are often overlooked. The discussions in OtL demonstrate an impressive level of collaboration among professionals facing shared challenges.

Planned sessions include:

  • Building smart with distributed teams: with Darren Murph, Head of Remote at GitLab; Jenny Bloom, former CFO at Zapier and MailChimp; and Sam Ross, General Counsel at Remote.
  • Bigger impact with automation: with Jeff Epstein, Operating Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, and Thejo Kote, Founder and CEO at Airbase.
  • An IPO mindset for early-stage companies: with Nadia Asoyan, VP of Finance at Trusted Health; Dan DeVall, VP of Business Development at Airbase; and Amer Ali, VP of Finance at Netlify.
  • Fundraising journey from startup to IPO: with Matt Murphy, Partner at Menlo Ventures; Mike Dinsdale, Managing Director at Akkadian Ventures; and Thejo Kote, Founder and CEO at Airbase.

Stay tuned for more!
